One dead after early morning, single-car crash

One person was killed in a single, fiery car crash that happened early Thursday morning, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Ronald Vincent Messer, 41, of Conway, died of injuries sustained in the collision, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.

The deadly crash happened about 3:30 a.m. Thursday on Pee Dee Highway in Horry County and involved only one vehicle, Collins said.

The driver was traveling east on Pee Dee Highway when the 1998 Toyota four-door car the person was driving ran off the right side of the road, struck trees, then caught fire, authorities said.

Collins said it was difficult to know if the crash victim was wearing a seatbelt because the car caught fire after the crash.

SCHP troopers are continuing to investigate the crash.
