Dial 10 digits
Beginning Saturday, callers will be required to dial the 843 area code from all landlines and cell phones.
Starting next month, a new 854 area code will begin to be phased into the eastern third of South Carolina in the 843 zone. Those currently assigned phone numbers will keep their 843 area codes, only new numbers may be assigned the 854 area code.
Numbers for certain services in a community, including 9-1-1 for police or fire/rescue emergencies, will remain unchanged, with just the three digits needed to dial.
