Robert Edge Parkway to have road closures for next few weeks
The S.C. Department of Transportation will be repairing Robert Edge Parkway in North Myrtle Beach beginning Tuesday.
Work will be done on the concrete that approaches the bridge on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway and is expected to last through Sept. 30. Work will include repairing the approach slabs, replacing and upgrading the expansion joint seals and replacing the damaged slope protection, according to SCDOT.
“That area is sunken so they’re going to [fix that area],” city spokesman Pat Dowling said. “That’s a heavily traveled road so it had to be done. … It was originally scheduled to be done this summer, but we asked DOT to wait until Labor Day.”
The repairs will cause detours for those who use Robert Edge Parkway through at least Sept. 25.
Beginning at 11:59 p.m. Monday, eastbound lanes – heading toward the beach – on Robert Edge Parkway from U.S. Highway 17 to beyond the bridge will close for about two weeks. During this time, drivers will not be able to enter North Myrtle Beach from Robert Edge Parkway.
Traffic will be directed to either access North Myrtle Beach using S.C. Highway 22 to U.S. Highway 17 or S.C. Highway 90 to S.C. Highway 9.
After evening rush hour on Sept. 14, westbound lanes and sidewalk on Robert Edge Parkway will be closed, according to SCDOT. At this point, all drivers leaving North Myrtle Beach will have to use U.S. 17 to either S.C. 9 or S.C. 22 to get to their destination.
After evening rush hour on Sept. 21, the westbound travel lanes will reopen, but the sidewalk will remain closed. On Sept. 25 the eastbound lanes and all sidewalks will open, according to SCDOT.
There may be some lane closures from Sept. 25 to 30 as needed for any remaining work. The tentative schedule is weather permitting.
“There will be detour signs on all of this,” Dowling said.
