Scattered showers expected Thursday, but not like severe storm on Wednesday afternoon

Some scattered showers are likely Thursday, but aren’t expected to be nearly as severe as the thunderstorm that roared across the area Wednesday afternoon, causing flooding and power outages, weather officials said.

Michael Ross, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C., said a frontal system that moved into the area earlier this week is causing the rain and will loom around near the Grand Strand Thursday and over the weekend, causing isolated thunderstorms, until it gradually weakens to nothing.

Ross said some rainfall is expected Thursday, with the heaviest expected to hit the Georgetown area, but won’t be like the heavy downpours of late Wednesday afternoon.

Flooding and power outages from the storm caused issues for afternoon motorists around 4:30 and 5 p.m. Wednesday.

More than 1,000 people were without power around 5 p.m. in Carolina Forest area, according to Santee Cooper's power outage map.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol website listed traffic light defects in the area as well, including the light at Carolina Forest and Postal Way, which tangled up traffic and caused delays.

A tree fell into the intersection of Highway 65 and Johnson Shelley Road north of Conway about 4:30 p.m., and took out a power line on the way down. The road was blocked until emergency crews could remove the tree.

Brooke Holden, communication specialist with Horry County Emergency Management Department, said while there were some downed trees, no significant damage was reported from the storm.

Holden said people reported seeing lots of lightning and also reported some localized flooding, mainly in the downtown Conway and Socastee areas.

Sam Hodge, emergency manager with Georgetown County Emergency Management Department, said on Friday that there was no damage reported with the storm in the Georgetown area.
