One man charged with murder in Loris shooting death

Horry County police arrested one man in connection to a Sunday morning homicide in Loris.

Garry Kristin Batton, 36, of Loris, was charged with murder Monday, according to Lt. Raul Denis. Batton is accused of shooting the victim.

Alvin J. Johnson, 35, of Loris, died from a gunshot wound to the chest. He also was shot twice in the lower body, according to Tony Hendrick, Horry County Deputy Coroner.

The shooting happened about 11:30 a.m. Sunday near Broad and Maple streets in Loris. Horry County police responded to the scene where the victim’s brother identified Batton as the suspect, according to a police report.

Officers went to Tall Pines Apartments in Loris to locate the suspect when they saw him run into an apartment, the report said. Officers went to the front door of the apartment and noticed the suspect ran from behind the apartment, the report said.

Police arrested Batton after a short foot chase and transported him to J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Loris and Horry County police are investigating.
