Search for SUV in Georgetown County pond turns up nothing

Tire tracks leading to a Georgetown County pond prompted divers to search the water Saturday, but officials said their efforts turned up no vehicles or people.

Shortly before 6:40 a.m., Midway Fire Rescue received a call about tracks that veered off Willbrook Boulevard and led to a pond, said Midway Chief Doug Eggiman. The pond is near the Tradition Golf Club in the Pawleys Island area.

A dive team from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office assisted Midway, but crews found neither a person nor a vehicle in the water, Eggiman said.

A sonar scan of the pond also yielded nothing, according to WPDE, The Sun News’ coverage partner. Authorities called off the search around 4 p.m.

Eggiman said the width of the tracks indicates the vehicle that made them was an SUV. The S.C. Highway Patrol is also investigating the matter.
