After decades feeding folks in the downtown area, Conway IGA is closing for good.

Corporate management and a local employee confirmed plans to close the longtime downtown store at 1800 N. Main St. in Conway, but didn’t disclose when operations will shut down.

And Conway isn’t alone. At least one other South Carolina store, Latta IGA in Dillon County, is closing, but it’s unclear how many locations are shutting.

“It is always difficult to make a decision to close a store, and we regret any impact these closings may have on the communities we serve,” Senior Director of Guest Engagement Kelly Dillon Davis at Lowes Foods said in a statement.

Parent company Alex Lee Inc. operates several grocery store chains, including Lowes Foods, Kj’s Market, IGA Southeast stores and others.

The company says it will assist the Conway IGA employees losing their jobs. It is not known how many employees the closure will affect.

“Our hosts will be offered positions at other Kj’s Market or IGA stores,” said Davis. “If this is geographically impractical, we will provide financial assistance to help with their transition.”

Corporate representatives did not immediately respond to The Sun News’ questions, including how many stores are closing and in which locations, when Conway IGA will close to the public and why are the locations shutting down.
