Local meteorologist announces sudden departure from Myrtle Beach-area TV station
A Grand Strand meteorologist has unexpectedly left WBTW News13, a CBS affiliate station, after almost four years.
According to local weatherman Scotty Powell, the decision wasn’t his.
“[I]t was not of my choosing to leave and caught me by surprise,” Powell told The Sun News. “I’m very sad it happened.”
The reason for Powell’s departure remains unclear, and WBTW did not immediately respond to The Sun News’ requests for comment. An announcement Powell shared to Facebook did mention recent staffing changes at the station.
“The past several months have brought many changes, and many familiar faces have departed one way or another,” wrote Powell. “While this chapter is ending sooner than I expected, I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to serve the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.”
Powell’s Facebook profile now lists him as a free-agent meteorologist. Although he is no longer working for WBTW, Powell plans to continue reporting weather in the Grand Strand. Citing the changing media landscape, he plans to continue sharing forecasts online through social media.
“I’ve always approached my job with a servants heart and look forward to what’s next and continuing to provide weather content for the area on my social media outlets, I love this community and look forward to continuing to serve them through the sunny days and stormy days,” Powell said, “so stay tuned and follow along.”
