CCU student, school board member’s daughter allegedly repeat racial slur in viral video
A viral video showing people repeating a racial slur has been viewed more than 900,000 times.
According to a Facebook account that shared the video, one of the individuals who said the racial slur on camera is a Coastal Carolina University student, and another is the daughter of a Pickens County school board member.
The Sun News reached out to the account for more information but did not receive an immediate response.
In the video, multiple people who don’t appear to be Black repeat the racial slur while prompting another to join in. The Facebook account alleged the people in the video, “decided to maliciously send this video to a biracial student” at Pickens High School.
“The intention behind the video was to hurt and harm the bi racial student as well as encourage others to inflict the same pain over and over again,” the video caption says.
Reaction from Pickens County school board member
The School District of Pickens County confirmed in an email that one of the individuals in the video is a student. Coastal Carolina University would not confirm whether any of the individuals involved are students, saying it doesn’t disclose information related to specific reviews conducted by the Dean of Students Office, consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
“Coastal Carolina University is aware of a social media post that has drawn concern within the campus community,” the school said in a statement. “Any reports of alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct are referred to the Dean of Students Office and are reviewed in accordance with University policies.”
Shannon Haskett, a School District of Pickens County board member whose daughter is allegedly seen in the video using the racial slur, also issued a statement.
“This week has been especially difficult for my family. A video involving a member of our family contained language that is offensive and harmful, and I want to acknowledge that clearly. My wife and I do not condone this type of language, and we are working through this together as a family,” Haskett wrote. “In our home, we strive to teach our children to treat others with dignity and respect, to take responsibility when they fall short, and to make meaningful amends. We are committed to doing that now. While this is a deeply personal matter for our family, I also understand the broader impact this has had on our community. I remain committed to upholding the values of respect and accountability, both as a board member and as a father.”
Reaction from CCU’s Black Student Association
The video also elicited responses from Coastal Carolina University student organizations. The Black Student Association took to social media to publicly condemn the behavior in the video.
“The use of the N-word is not harmless, casual, or excusable. It is rooted in a long history of racism, violence, and the dehumanization of Black people.... We are calling on Coastal Carolina University to take clear and meaningful action. That includes addressing this incident directly, holding those involved accountable, and implementing stronger measures to educate the campus community about the impact of racist language and behavior,” the post says.
