Myrtle Beach fishing altercation goes viral. Woman takes poles, tries to bite man

Whether inland or on the coast, Grand Strand fishers need to watch for bites from alligators and mosquitoes while angling. They don’t have to worry about human bites – at least not usually.

But a viral video of a dispute between two men fishing and a woman trying to confiscate their rods in the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina escalated into an unusual altercation.

“You’re going to bite me? Are you f------ okay?” one man, who appears to be filming on Ray Ban Meta glasses says. “Alright, I’m calling the cops.”

The video was initially shared to the Instagram account @backgroundbassin. However, after garnering more than 62,000 likes on the video in just a day, the account is no longer available. “Crazy Karen steals our rods while fishing and tries to bite me,” the initial caption read.

The Sun News was unable to obtain comment from the @backgroundbassin account as of 11:30 a.m Friday.

The viral moment was also shared on TikTok on the account @therobbieharvey.

What happened at the scene?

In the now-viral scene, the woman tells the men she’s “removing” two of their four poles because they’re fishing at a pond where the practice is banned. The woman points to signs announcing the prohibition, while the men maintain several others around the pond are fishing at the same time.

“We’ll bring them back to the car,” one of the men says. “We’ll leave right now.”

But, in the video, the woman won’t relinquish the rods, instead telling the men they’ll be able to pick them up from an office.

In the escalating back-and-forth, the men accuse the woman of $1,000 in property theft, as she alleges they’re assaulting her by trying to pry the fishing poles away. Eventually, the two men join forces trying to grab the rods.

That’s when the woman appears to move to bite the arm of the man filming.

The video racked up more than 4,000 comments in a day, filled with jokes, advice and cartoonish violence lamenting the chance to throw the woman in the pond.

“Your [sic] cortisol mogging this granny,” the top Instagram comment said. One TikTok comment with more than 5,000 likes reads, “I’m noticing people are A LOT nicer than I am.”

Despite threats to involve authorities, a follow-up video posted by @backgroundbassin said the men were able to recover the fishing poles “without anyone getting injured using unreasonable force,” although the woman allegedly followed them to the parking lot.
