Severe weather forecasted for the area Monday is prompting Horry County Schools to release students early.

At least one college is also shifting its operations.

The Grand Strand area is expected to experience severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening that will bring damaging wind gusts, possible tornadoes and large hail, according to the National Weather Service.

The school district will dismiss students 2 1/2 hours early Monday, March 16, 2026, according to an email from Lisa Bourcier, director of strategic communications and community engagement. In addition, all after-school activities, including Kid-Care and athletic activities, are cancelled.

The dismissal is to ensure the safety of students and staff, the email said.

Although students at Horry-Georgetown Technical College are on spring break this week, the college will close at noon on Monday to allow employees and students time to travel and prepare, according to a Facebook post from the school.

Outside of thunderstorms, winds may gust as high as 45 mph during the day Monday, according to the NWS.

The Myrtle Beach area has an enhanced chance of severe weather as of Sunday evening.
