Fishing just got more expensive at this Horry County pier. See the new fees

Fishing just got a little pricier in Surfside Beach, South Carolina.

At a Tuesday night meeting, the Surfside Beach Town Council unanimously voted to raise pier fishing fees and charge $2 per child. Before the town amended the Surfside Beach Pier fee schedule, children under 12 years fished free with a paying adult.

However, some in council pushed back on framing the $2 per kid as a fee, saying the money covers the cost of wristbands for children, which the town has paid for until now. Councilman Rick Lawhorn described it as an “administrative fee.”

Grown-ups will pay more, too. Standard fishing fees for adults used to run $12 a day, $45 a week or $150 a year. Under the new fee schedule, adults pay $14 daily, $55 weekly or $200 annually.

King fishing fees are also more expensive. Daily rates increased $2 from $14 to $16; weekly rates increased $10 from $65 to $75; and annual rates increased $100 from $200 to $300.
