A Myrtle Beach funeral home and a shipping service are accused of transporting a woman’s body more than 1,000 miles away from a New Jersey funeral home after a wrong body arrived instead.

Mary Faith Molnar had requested to be buried in a family plot in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, after passing away on Sept. 21, 2024, at her daughter’s Myrtle Beach home, according to a lawsuit filed Jan. 30, 2026, by Mary Ann Tufo.

Tufo made funeral arrangements for her mother, working with McMillan-Small Funeral Home Inc. in Myrtle Beach and Inman Shipping Worldwide, to have Molnar’s body taken to a funeral home in New Jersey.

Tufo entered into a contract with the two companies for her mother’s transportation. The funeral was to take place on Sept. 25, 2024, the lawsuit said.

However, once the New Jersey funeral home received the body, it was noted that the body had a different name tag, the lawsuit said. After an investigation, it was determined that Molnar’s body had been shipped to a location in Nebraska. This caused the funeral ceremonies planned for Molnar to be cancelled and moved to a later date to allow for Molnar’s body to be shipped back to New Jersey, the lawsuit said.

Messages left with both defendants were not returned.

The lawsuit claims that the companies’ actions caused Tufo to suffer emotional distress, trauma, humiliation and “profound” mental anguish, resulting in financial losses related to funeral costs and corrective services.

Tufo is seeking a jury trial for the damages.
