Pending snow and extreme cold forcing Horry County Schools changes. What to know
A snow storm that is set to hit the Myrtle Beach area this weekend, bringing with it extreme cold temperatures into Monday, has forced Horry County Schools to change its school schedule.
The school district will have eLearning for students on Monday, according to the district’s Facebook page.
Due to the possibility of hazardous travel conditions caused by the upcoming weekend’s winter weather, Horry County Schools will implement an eLearning day, the post said. All extracurricular activities, including athletics and other events planned for Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1) and on Monday will be canceled.
All schools will be closed but operational for students and staff through the eLearning, the post said.
HCS will send another update no later than 2 p.m. on Monday regarding any potential alterations to the school schedule for Tuesday, the post said.
The Grand Strand could see snowfall of up to 12 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Snow onset is now trending earlier than expected, and could start as early as Saturday morning.
The area is also under an extreme cold watch for early Saturday evening through Monday morning, and a cold weather advisory is in effect for parts of the region Friday night through Saturday evening
Dangerously cold temperatures are expected to bring wind chills down into the single digits on Saturday and Sunday nights.
