A waterfront Georgetown County restaurant known for serving fresh, local ingredients is closing its doors.

Root, located at 919 Front St. on the Historic Georgetown Harborwalk, announced Monday that it will be closing on Feb. 5. The restaurant made the announcement via a Facebook post, which received over 100 comments lamenting the loss of the eatery.

“We express a heartfelt thanks to everyone for their loyalty and forever grateful for the friendships built over the years. Please keep the Root family in your prayers as we go through this devastating time,” the restaurant said in its announcement.

The restaurant did not say why it had decided to close.

Someone from Root declined to comment on Tuesday morning.

The restaurant notably uses local seafood, produce and meats in its menu, which features options ranging from southern classics such as shrimp and grits to ginger soy bowls. They also offer plentiful vegetarian options.
