Popular Grand Strand restaurant will add 9th location in Conway. Here’s where

Conway had been trying to get Jon Angell to open a restaurant in the city for some time, but it wasn’t until a large redevelopment of a strip mall was planned that he finally agreed.

Now, the city will see the ninth location of J Peters Bar and Grill, which will be located in Coastal Centre, located along 16th Avenue and Church Street.

The new restaurant will be behind the Belk store, facing Church Street, Angell said.

Angell said the city had for the last eight to nine years tried to get him to open a restaurant downtown. But when plans for the strip mall were discussed, Angell was on board.

“There are not many casual restaurants like J Peters” in that area,” Angell said.

The restaurant, which includes locations in Carolina Forest, North Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island, serves burgers and sandwiches, steaks, ribs, soups and salads.

Rise Partners, a commercial real estate firm, acquired the Conway property in October 2024, eyeing revitalization. Now, the mall is expected to house more than 140,000 square feet of national retail space and is set to open in the summer.

Angell expects that Rise Partners will finish construction of the building by July and then turn it over to him to complete the restaurant. Angell said he hopes to have the restaurant operating in December. J Peters will have a 10-year lease at the property.

The number of shops coming to the mall could change as construction continues, but the current plan is for eight to 10 new construction storefronts and four to five existing spaces to be filled, according to company officials.

Currently, HomeGoods, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Marshall’s, Ulta, PetSmart, Five Below and Burlington is set to join J Peters at the mall. It is also reported that several fast food chains will open there.

The retail strip originally opened in 1969, housing stores such as Winn-Dixie and Kmart. But the mall underwent years of decline, with the closure of Kmart marking a permanent shift in its success, The Sun News previously reported.
