Update: Horry County changes outdoor burn ban. Area was at risk for wildfires
An outdoor burn ban in Horry County will be lifted beginning Tuesday morning, according to the county government.
However, officials are asking resident to follow regulations regarding open burning.
The ban went into effect Sunday because of current weather conditions, according to a Facebook post from the Horry County government. The area is in “extreme fire damage” as a result of the low humidity and dry and windy conditions, the post said.
The City of Conway also issued a ban on open burning outdoors effective Sunday.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission issued Saturday a Red Flag Fire Alert for 33 counties across the state, including Horry County. The alert is being issued to discourage people from burning when weather conditions present an elevated risk of wildfire. However, that alert was lifted on Monday.
Horry County Fire Rescue has responded to several outdoor fires in the last few weeks.
Nearly a year ago, county and state fire crews battled a wildfire that burned more than 2,000 acres in the Carolina Forest area. Residents were evacuated from their homes as a wall of fire threatened to burn several neighborhoods.
It took fire crews months before the Myrtle Beach area fire was eventually extinguished. No homes or structures were destroyed in the fire.
A burn ban also was in place and the fire started when a person was burning in their backyard.
