Update: Coroner names victim of deadly road rage shooting that shut down SC road

An apparent road rage shooting that killed one person shut down a portion of a major Horry County roadway Tuesday morning.

A section of Highway 90 near Star Bluff Road in the Longs area was closed following the shooting incident, according to the Horry County Police Department. The department announced the closure and their investigation into the incident on Facebook.

After the crash, 33-year-old Paul Jones Greenwood was shot and killed in an altercation that escalated, according to an email sent by Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard. The shooting took place just after 8 a.m. at 9072 Highway 90. Greenwood was from Nichols.

A Sun News reporter on the scene observed what appeared to be a crash involving three cars and the Horry County Coroner’s Office removing the body from the scene.

Khadijah Hemingway, who was one of the drivers involved in the accident, had just dropped off her daughter when she was hit by a driver of a white pickup truck. The truck driver tried to swerve to miss another vehicle but couldn’t, and ended up in the ditch, Hemingway said.

The driver of a Honda Civic which was hit by the pickup truck became upset, and allegedly ended up fatally shooting the driver of the truck after heated words were exchanged, Hemingway said. Hemingway witnessed the deadly shooting.

“He literally stood there beside me,” Hemingway said of the alleged shooter.

One person tied to the shooting, which is believed to be the driver of the Honda, was taken into custody, according to Horry County spokesperson Thomas Bell. He confirmed that one person sustained critical injuries.

“You tried to calm them down,” said Evettie Hemingway, who is the mother of Khadijah Hemingway and was at the scene Tuesday. “Everybody’s life has changed.”

Both women know the truck driver and his mother, who live in the Longs area. The vehicle of the alleged shooter has North Carolina license plates.

The name of the person taken into custody was not released.

Both lanes of traffic between Star Bluff Road and Highway 90 were closed in both directions for about 5 hours. Drivers were asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.
