Update: Police investigate threat at Conway HS. Caller says shooter on way to school
Police were investigating a threat at Conway High School and students and staff were asked to remain inside their classrooms.
Conway Police posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, about 10:42 a.m. Tuesday that officers were on the scene investigating a threat made to Conway High School.
Parents have taken to social media to ask about the incident. A message sent to parents from Principal Tanika McKissick said that the school is on a “hold” and that students and staff are safe.
The hold for students has been released, and student and staff are safe, according to Conway spokesperson June Wood by email. Detectives believe the call made to the school was an AI generated hoax, threatening that a shooter was coming to the school. There will continue to be an increased presence of officers located at the school, Wood said.
Police reported that at 10:08 a.m. that the school had received a call about a potential threat and notified police, according to a Facebook post from Conway Police. “There is no active threat or danger to students or staff at this time,” the post said.
Conway High School is currently working closely with law enforcement to investigate a potential threat, according to an email earlier Tuesday from Horry County Schools spokesperson Lisa Bourcier. “At this time, the school is in a Hold as part of our standard safety response procedures,” she said. “Students and staff are safe and continuing instruction inside their classrooms. Parents have been notified and the school will share another update shortly as more verified information becomes available.”
Officers remain on scene as the investigation continues. Schools in the area have been placed on hold related to this incident out of an abundance of caution.
