Will Thanksgiving bring freezing temps around Myrtle Beach, South Carolina?

As people around the Grand Strand prepare for Thanksgiving, some may be reaching for their coasts.

The Myrtle Beach area is expecting clear, sunny Thanksgiving and Black Friday weather, but temperatures will be colder than usual for this time of year. At night temperatures will near or drop below freezing.

“Right around Thanksgiving, it’s going to be turning cooler, so we’re going to have above normal temperatures in the lead up to Thanksgiving, ahead of a cold front that will be moving through Wednesday night,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Pfaff.

Temperature highs in the Myrtle Beach area around Thanksgiving are typically in the mid 60s Fahrenheit, but this year they’ll drop to the 50s F because of a cold front coming through Wednesday night.

Despite the potential for freezing temperatures, snow, sleet and hail are unlikely. The Grand Strand has only received 50% to 75% of its normal seasonal precipitation over the last month, and that dry spell is likely to continue.

“It’ll be dry, especially after Wednesday night, when that front comes through,” Pfaff said. “Even though it’ll be cooling off, there’s just no moisture in the atmosphere to work with, anything to give us any precipitation.”

Myrtle Beach Thanksgiving week forecast

Tuesday is expected to be partly sunny with a 20% chance of rain. If showers strike, they’ll likely come in the afternoon. During the day, temperatures will reach the low 70s F along the coast, and the mid 70s F inland. At night, temperatures should drop to around 60 degrees F.

Wednesday will start warm and mostly sunny with a 20% chance of showers, probably in the afternoon, before temperatures drop sharply at night when the cold front reaches the area.

Inland, temperatures are forecasted for daytime highs in the upper 70s F and nighttime lows in the lower 40s F. Closer to the beach, highs will be around the mid 70s and lows will be around the mid 40s F.

On Thanksgiving, folks can enjoy clear, sunny skies with highs in the upper 50s F. At night, temperatures will drop back into the 30s F. Coastal areas probably won’t freeze, but areas further west might.

“I think the inland areas could see freezing temperatures, Thanksgiving night,” said Pfaff. “But for right along the beach, it could be lows to 33 to 35 type temperatures.”

The sunny, chilly weather will carry into Black Friday, with highs in the lower 50s F. The partly cloudy night is forecasted to bring lows in the lower 30s F along the coast and the upper 20s inland.

And Myrtle Beach should expect the cool weather to continue into the weekend.

“It looks like we won’t return to normal [until] maybe by Sunday, it should be back near seasonal conditions,” Pfaff said.

Current predictions call for partly cloudy weather on Saturday and Sunday. Temperature highs are forecasted to reach the lower 50s F to the upper 60s F, with lows from the upper 20s F to the mid 30s F.
