One arrested, another on the loose after failed jewelry heist in Myrtle Beach Mall

One man is in custody and another is on the loose after one of the men tried to steal more than $10,000 in jewelry from Empress Jewelers in the Myrtle Beach Mall Sunday.

Horry County police responded to the mall at about 6 p.m. for a call of two men trying to flee with the jewelry, according to a police report. The Briarcliff Acres Police Department helped Horry County surround a wooded area where police found Tanniah B. Whitfield, 30, of Summerton.

Whitfield is in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing on a charge of shoplifting, value over $10,000.

An accomplice, the reported get-away-driver, was able to flee the area in a white, 1999 Ford Crown Victoria.

Anyone with information about this case, or the whereabouts of the accomplice, is asked to call police at 843-915-8477.
