After nearly 40 years as a fixture in the Grand Strand golf community, River Oaks Golf Club is preparing to close its greens for good.

Once the South Carolina club closes, owner Chris Manning Communities plans to replace the course with single-family housing units as part of a larger plan to build nearly 600 new houses in Myrtle Beach.

Operated and managed through a lease by investors under the name River Oaks Golf Club LLC, River Oaks hosted one last tournament with “The Final Round” Scramble on Nov. 20.

The 18-hole club was originally set to permanently close after its lease ended on Oct. 31, but the closure was delayed until Nov. 30.

River Oaks used to feature 27 holes, before Chris Manning Communities sold part of the course to Mungo Homes in 2021. When Chris Manning Communities acquired the remaining 18 holes in 2024, River Oaks Golf Club wrote on Facebook that it hoped to remain open for a few more years.

Construction plans include 590 housing units on the land where the original 27-hole course sprawled, On the Green reported over the summer. The land sold in 2021 is set to feature 220 lots, and 370 lots are planned for the current River Oaks Golf Club course.
