This Horry County beach bar named a ‘legendary’ spot in the South. Here’s why
A Surfside Beach bar has been named among the South’s “legendary” dive bars.
Scotty’s Beach Bar, which is just steps from the ocean, has been a favorite of locals and tourists since it opened in 1988.
Southern Living named it to its list of 25 best dive bars, which included spots in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Alabama and North Carolina. Two other spots in South Carolina also made the list: The Griffon in Charleston and The Esso Club in Clemson.
The magazine said the definition of a dive bar is “almost anywhere you can find a cheap drink and live music on any given night.”
And Scotty’s, located at 11 S. Seaside Drive, seems to fit the description. The oceanfront watering hole is a “homey” joint that serves cocktails and has “perfect sunset views,” the magazine said.
“We’re literally right on the ocean,” bar manager Michael Sarver said.
Scotty’s is known for its karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights and on the deck during the summer, which is packed with beachgoers, Sarver said.
While Sarver isn’t thrilled about being called a dive bar, he is happy that the bar has been recognized as a favorite in the South.
