Crash near Surfside Beach leaves pedestrian dead. He was trying to get his mail

A Wednesday night crash left a pedestrian dead in Horry County.

The crash took place at about 6:18 p.m. on SC 707 near the Hidden Woods Drive extension, about 3.5 miles north of Surfside Beach in the Socastee area, according to a release sent by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The victim was 72-year-old Gregory Weitl of Fort Wayne, Indiana, according to an email sent Thursday by Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard. He was trying to cross the road to get to the post office, according to the email.

Weitl was struck and killed by a pickup truck. The driver of the truck was uninjured, the release said.

Weitl was traveling west across SC 707 when they were struck by the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which was traveling north along SC 707, the release said.
