Black bear became tourist in North Myrtle Beach. Video shows his nighttime visit

People at a North Myrtle Beach bar got a treat Wednesday night as a black bear was spotted trotting along Ocean Boulevard.

The bear didn’t seem interested in joining the group for a drink, but appeared to make his way across the highway and toward a resort.

The bear was spotted about 9:42 p.m. near Baywatch Resort, 2701 S. Ocean Blvd., according to a Facebook post from North Myrtle Beach Police.

Officers responded to the sighting and located a bear cub weighing 130 pounds in the area of 21st Avenue South and South Ocean Boulevard, the post said.

A video posted online shows the bear near Molly Darcy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, 1701 S. Ocean Blvd. People were yelling at the bear, but it ignored the shouts and continued on its way.

The bear was safely directed westbound and eventually entered the wooded area near 9th Avenue South and Strand Avenue, the police post said.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources was notified and responded to assist. DNR advised that the bear is likely to make its way back to its natural habitat and that there may be additional sightings over the next day or so.

It’s not unusual to see bears along the Grand Strand.

Police reminded people that if they do see a bear not to feed it and to secure trash cans, as well as remove any outdoor food sources, including pet food.

Officers and DNR will continue to monitor the area, the post said.
