Plane makes emergency landing at Myrtle Beach airport after smoke reported
A commercial airliner bound for the Myrtle Beach International Airport from New York City Wednesday morning reported possible smoke in the cockpit.
Crew on Delta flight 1988 with scheduled service between LaGuardia Airport and Myrtle Beach reported a smell in the flight deck and an emergency was declared, according to an email from Delta Air Lines spokesperson Samantha Moore Facteau.
At 11:30 a.m., the crew of the aircraft reported the incident and as a precaution, airport emergency response units were dispatched to their designated staging areas, according to an email from Lauren Wehrung with the Myrtle Beach airport.
The aircraft landed safely a few minutes later and the crew elected to proceed to the assigned terminal gate, Wehrung said.
There were 87 customers and six crew members aboard the Boeing 737-800. While flight crew donned oxygen masks in the flight deck, oxygen masks did not deploy in the cabin for cabin crew or customers, Facteau said.
Upon initial inspection at the gate, no visible smoke was observed or reported, and passengers deplaned normally, she said.
The airline will conduct a further inspection of the aircraft prior to returning it to service, Wehrung said.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and that’s why our flight crew followed procedures to land safely at Myrtle Beach,” Facteau said in the email. “We thank our customers for their understanding.”
