Flag after the play. Brawl breaks out between CCU and App State. What happened
A flag on the play is enough to make any football fan unhappy, but a flag after the play between two longstanding rivals – well, that’s just fighting words.
And that’s what happened on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, when Coastal Carolina University took on their rivals Appalachian State University and a brawl broke out after the Chanticleers’ 45-37 win.
It’s no secret that the two teams don’t like one another.
Mountaineer fans flipped off celebrating CCU players and threw trash at them in 2023, and in 2024, CCU fans stormed the field at Brooks Stadium after their win.
Earlier last week, ahead of Saturday’s game, football coach Tim Beck was quoted, as saying, “They don’t like us, we don’t like them.”
A video shows CCU and App State players pushing and shoving one another on the field after a CCU player reportedly planted a CCU flag in the midfield of the Mountaineers’ home turf.
Reports have called the incident “disrespectful” on the part of CCU. Reports say the incident started after visiting players got into it with home fans after the win. The flag was planted on the App State logo.
“It was greatly exaggerated that it was a brawl,” said Mike Uva, associate athletics director for communications and media for CCU. “It’s two schools that have a deep connection when it comes to a rivalry.”
Uva said that there was some shoving when one of the CCU players ran to center field with a team flag. He said it was not placed in the field.
“(They were) in the moment,” Uva said about bringing the flag onto the field. “They were very excited to beat (App State) four in a row, two at Boone (North Carolina).”
It is unclear if there will be discipline taken or if it violates NCAA rules.
The school doesn’t anticipate anything disciplinary, Uva said. If there is anything with the team or the program, it will be handled internally, he said.
