Horry County Schools students consistently performed better than the state average, according to new reports from the South Carolina Department of Education.

The South Carolina College-and Career-Ready Assessments, or SC READY, assessments evaluate elementary and middle school students in English language arts (ELA), math and science.

In the latest SC READY reports released by the Department of Education, Horry County students in every grade tested met or exceeded minimum state standards at higher rates than South Carolina students as a whole.

The Department of Education also found that about 76% of Horry County high school juniors assessed earned Career Ready Credentials, which is 7% higher than juniors statewide.

Compared to roughly 60% of students in South Carolina, nearly 64% of Horry County students tested met or exceeded ELA expectations. That’s the highest percentage for the county in the assessment’s 10-year history.

Horry County students also outperformed their South Carolina peers in math and science. Locally, about 51% of kids met or exceeded math expectations, compared to roughly 44% statewide.

In science assessments, which only evaluate fourth and sixth grade students, more than 56% of Horry County students and around 49% of South Carolina students met or exceeded expectations.
