Rich Hafer is not immune to negative comments about his restaurant’s food, but when a recent detractor slammed the grill’s signature food item as “the most disgusting burger in the world,” he knew he couldn’t let it slide.

So the co-owner of Greg’s Cabana Bar and Grill in Garden City put the comment from the “Lady on Google” on the business’ sign. The restaurant then took to social media telling people to “stop in for what some lady on Google” says was “the most disgusting hamburgers in the world.”

“It’s all in fun,” Hafer said. “We have a very local and good following. That’s really the reason we did it. For everyone to get a chuckle out of it.”

The Facebook post so far has more than 200 comments.

The restaurant isn’t the only one along the Grand Strand that has decided to clap back at online criticism. It does appear, however, to be the only one so far that has taken it to such a grand level.

As more people take to social media, including Google and Facebook, to post comments and thoughts about anything and everything, restaurants often find themselves the brunt of harsh reviews.

Usually, Hafer let’s such negative comments go, choosing not to respond, he said. But this review “kind of stuck out,” Hafer said.

Anthony Ludovici-DeBrigida, owner of Anto’s Pizza in Conway, will often take to his pizza restaurant’s Facebook page to deal with critics. But even he was surprised by a recent comment from a person who threatened to report him to ICE after he called her out for using the word “brunt” instead of “burnt” to describe his pizzas.

“I’m American,” Ludovici-DeBrigida put in his post. “Muchas gracias Conway, hasta manana.”

Ludovici-DeBrigida said he tries to handle any issues with a customer’s food “amicably,” but he becomes annoyed when a person trolls the restaurant’s page or takes to social media to deal with the issue instead of in person.

He only posts reviews that “are disrespectful to my staff or are personal,” Ludovici-DeBrigida said.

“For me personally, this is our whole life, he said. “We’re not going to be for everyone. ... We’re not Papa Johns or Pizza Hut; this is a mom and pop (restaurant).”

People say things on the internet because they have no repercussions, Ludovici-DeBrigida said. And it’s not just restaurants, he added. “It’s any type of business on social media,” he said.

Hafer said the restaurant and its staff can take constructive criticism, and considering they serve several hundred meals a day, the bad reviews are minimal.

“We’re not perfect by any stretch of the imagination,” Hafer said. “(The point of the sign) was not to degrade somebody. (It is a) nice wake up call. We’ve got to make sure that we’re putting out the best” product possible.

However, “you have to be an extremely well traveled individual to put up a review that says ‘the most disgusting hamburgers in the world,” he added.
