Ocean swimmer hurt in ‘marine life incident’ on beach in Myrtle Beach
A person was injured Friday in what Myrtle Beach rescue crews are calling a “marine life incident.”
Myrtle Beach Fire crews responded to 14th Avenue North on the beach about 1:30 p.m. where they found a man injured, according to a text from Capt. Jonathan Evans.
Evans said the patient was treated and then transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Witnesses on social media indicated that it was a shark bite. Beachgoers were cleared from the water after the incident.
Evans said he didn’t know what caused the injuries and couldn’t confirm what type of marine life caused the injuries.
Shark sightings near the shore have increased over the last two weeks. Officials say it could be because of Hurricane Erin, but the most likely cause is food availability.
