A fire at a hotel on Ocean Boulevard drew a quick response from Myrtle Beach Fire Department crews Sunday morning.

The commercial structure fire took place at the Sea Gypsy at 304 North Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, a hotel scheduled for demolition. No injuries or victims have been reported, but one firefighter was transported to the hospital for “heat related illness,” according to Battalion Chief Christian Sliker.

Sliker said that fighting a fire while under a heat warning can be “a lot” for crews. There is currently no further information on the status of the firefighter.

The hotel was already abandoned and about to be demolished. Allen’s Demolition, LLC got started on the demolition of the Sea Gypsy and surrounding properties on July 25, according to a Facebook post by the company.

As of about 10:25 a.m. on Sunday, crews had the fire “mostly under control,” Capt. Jon Evans said. However, the blaze has not yet been completely extinguished and the public is asked to avoid the area for their safety and the safety of responders.

The fire has now been marked “under control,” according to a Facebook post by the fire department. Crews will remain on scene for “salvage and overhaul operations.”

A visit to the hotel revealed that burn damage was visible from the outside of the building, with scorch marks surrounding several upper-level windows. Officers at the scene said they did not yet know exactly how much damage the building suffered from the fire.

It is unknown who called the fire in or what their relation to the hotel is, Evans said.

At this time, it is unknown what started the fire. An investigation will take place to determine the cause of the blaze.
