A heavy police presence at a popular Myrtle Beach tourist attraction over the weekend prompted rumors to spread online that a shooting had taken place.

On Saturday night, questions swirled on social media platforms about the presence of multiple law enforcement officers and emergency responders just outside of Broadway at the Beach. The abundance of people and red and blue lights on the scene prompted some to speculate that a shooting was the cause, but police say that assumption isn’t accurate.

What drew that response from law enforcement was a fight that broke out over a parking space, according to Myrtle Beach Police Lt. Allen Amick. No shooting occurred that night.

The Sun News has requested additional information on whether injuries or arrests resulted from the altercation.

Broadway at the Beach did not respond to requests for comment.

Some commenters on social media posts asking about a potential shooting say they were present when the police appeared, and their suspicions were raised when they saw the flashing lights of police cars and the area being blocked off to passersby.

Worries over violent crimes have been expressed in the wake of three shootings that took place in recent months in Myrtle Beach’s popular tourist district on Ocean Boulevard, two of which were fatal.

However, parking was the only thing that raised concern over the weekend at Broadway at the Beach among visitors.
