With wetlands, coastline and rivers, the Grand Strand faces flood risks every hurricane season.
Although South Carolina storms can be unpredictable, data from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) shows which areas pay the most for flood insurance and gives prospective residents an idea of which areas are most at risk.
Using data from single-family policies in-force as of August 31, 2023, the NFIP calculates flood insurance rates based on exposure to variables like inland floods, storm surges, tsunamis, the Great Lakes and coastal erosion.
The median cost of flood insurance is $647 across Horry County, where 100% of flood insurance policies have exposure to inland flooding. On top of that, 93.9% of policies in the county face storm surge exposure and 4.3% face coastal erosion exposure.
