File

The body of a swimmer has been recovered from the ocean in Pawleys Island.

Rescue crews responded to a swimmer in distress just before 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

The body of Chase Childers was recovered about 6:15 p.m., according to Pawleys Island Police on X, formerly Twitter. Childers was on vacation in the area.

A marine unit and a drone operator were dispatched to the area of Atlantic Avenue after bystanders were unsuccessful at rescuing a swimmer, a release from the sheriff’s office said.

Pawleys Island Police posted on X, formerly Twitter, that officers received a call for multiple swimmers in distress near Shell Road beach access. One person was missing and a search was initiated by Midway Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Police said that Childers and another person entered the water to help four to five people who were in distress. “Sadly, Mr. Childers was caught in the rip current, as well,” the police post said. “He died trying to save others.”
