Mom of teen shot in Myrtle Beach mass shooting says son recovering after weeks in ICU

A mother of a teenager injured during a mass shooting along Myrtle Beach’s Ocean Boulevard last month said her son is recovering.

Kristy Flow is the latest parent to speak about the shooting, which left an 18-year-old dead and 11 others injured, including her 17-year-old son.

Flow, who was at the hospital on Tuesday, didn’t speak long, but said in a press release that her son, who has only been identified as “John Doe,” was unarmed and fleeing the shooting that happened along the busy and crowded tourist section just before midnight on April 26, 2025.

The teen was shot in the back and spent multiple days in the hospital and ICU. The bullet that hit him remains lodged in his chest.

“They almost killed my son that night,” Flow said in the release. “They shot him in the back while he was unarmed and running away. He was just a teenager at the beach like any other and now he has to carry that bullet inside him for the rest of his life.”

Police said that Jerrius Davis, of Bennettsville, shot into the crowd along the sidewalk in the 900 block of North Ocean Boulevard, prompting officers to return fire, killing Davis.

Dash cam footage released more than a month after the shooting by Myrtle Beach Police show Davis firing four shots into a crowd along the sidewalk outside of a restaurant. Seconds later, Officer Brandon O’Rourke exits the restaurant, followed by two other officers, and fires five rounds into the crowd toward Davis. The other two officers were identified as Mohamad El-Kelwi and Jeramiah Johnson.

While police have released dash cam footage from a nearby police car, they have yet to release the officers’ body cam footage, including O’Rourke’s.

The family has hired national civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers, who claims in the press release that Davis wasn’t the only one to fire recklessly into the crowd that night. Sellers said that O’Rourke also needs to be held accountable for shooting into the crowd.

A message left for Sellers was not immediately returned.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division continues to investigate the officer involved shooting. O’Rourke remains on administrative leave during the investigation.

Myrtle Beach Police have arrested Jawarren Bethea, 18, of Laurinburg, and two unnamed juveniles in connection to the incident.

Two other teens, Zavian Hariston, 13, and Serenity Chavis, 15, shot that night also have come forward. It is unclear if Davis’ gun fire hit anyone, or how many of the officer’s bullets hit those who were injured. Chavis has claimed that a police officer shot her.

Myrtle Beach Police have dodged questions about the shooting for a month, stating they have to wait until the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division finishes its investigation. However, there is no policy within SLED or Myrtle Beach Police that says the department has to wait to release information.
