Myrtle Beach timeshare infested with bed bugs, suit says. Renters claim vacation ruined
Two Virginia residents are claiming a Myrtle Beach timeshare they rented for vacation was infested with bed bugs.
Joseph Kirby, of Arlington, and Thuy Truong, of Fairfax County, filed a lawsuit against Marriott Ownership Resorts and OceanWatch Villas Owners Association.
The two people rented a room at Marriott’s OceanWatch Villas at Grande Dunes, 8550 Costa Verde Drive, on July 5 and 6, 2024. OceanWatch Villas is a part of the Marriott Vacations Club, a vacation ownership program, better known as a timeshare.
“We have implemented comprehensive cleaning and maintenance procedures across our resorts to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for our owners and guests,” according to an email statement on April 11 from Marriott Vacations Club. “Regarding this particular situation, we believe it to be an isolated occurrence.”
On the first night of their stay, the renters were bit by bed bugs in their room while they slept, the suit, filed on April 7, 2025, said. The renters informed management of the bed bug situation.
The suit claims that the rental company and association were negligent and should have known that the rooms were infested with bed bugs.
The plaintiffs are asking for damages that include financial losses, including money spent on the hotel, nonrefundable expenses related to their vacation, and medical expenses.
