In 2023, the City of North Myrtle Beach bought the Pelican Motel for $5.4 million and Atlantic Breeze for about $2.3 million. Now, the city plans to take a wrecking ball to both.

The City of North Myrtle Beach will demolish both properties, Public Information Officer Lauren Jessie told The Sun News. Jessie added the city is working on a contract to knock down both properties.

Jessie added that the land will first be used for unpaved beach parking, and the plan is to pave the lots within the next two years.

Like Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach also needs more parking for its beaches, and the demolition project intends to help alleviate this problem.

“It’s the best amenity we have to offer,” Jessie said in an interview with The Sun News. “We just want to be able to provide that parking for them so they can access the beach.”

Built in the 1960s, Horry County Land Records lists the Pelican Motel’s market value at about $4.7 million. Also built in the 1960s, Horry County Land Records lists Atlantic Breeze’s market value at $2.7 million.
