Inmate dies at Horry County jail. SLED will investigate the prisoner’s death

An inmate at J. Reuben Long Detention Center died on Tuesday, according to the Horry County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers and medical staff observed the inmate in medical distress in his cell at 8 a.m., according to an email from sheriff’s spokesperson Brennan Cavanagh.

EMS responded and transported the inmate to Conway Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the email said.

No foul play is detected, Cavanagh said.

The inmate’s name or what he was in jail for has not been released.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
