Built in the Great Depression, Georgetown’s Armory is for sale. Is development planned?
A nearly century-old building and the surrounding unused land could be slated for a large development project.
The armory in Georgetown at 800 Church St. is for sale on the commercial real estate platform LoopNet. First listed in November 2024, the armory is included in about 230 acres of undeveloped land along the Great Pee Dee River.
A price wasn’t listed for the property and 230 acres. Lauren Bremer, a real estate professional listed for the armory, did not return a request for comment before publication.
The listing indicates the property is meant for a larger re-development project, stating the armory was re-purposed for a concert venue. The listing also says the property is pre-approved for buildings up to eight stories and “ideally suited for a hotel, townhomes, or apartments.”
A potential sale and re-development would mark a major change for a building dating back to the Great Depression. According to a 2000 survey report on the City of Georgetown’s cultural resources, the armory was built at 800 Church Street in the late 1930s as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal era Works Progress Administration.
As of March 5, 2025, the armory is not on the South Carolina Department of Archives & History’s national register of historic places.
