Want to see your childhood stars? Where the heartthrobs & TV faves will be in Myrtle Beach
It’s not unusual to see celebrities in the Myrtle Beach area.
After all the coastal city is a top vacation spot, and oftentimes they can be seen enjoying the same restaurants and attractions as other visitors.
The best moments come when you are able to see those stars you remember from your younger days.
Here are some upcoming shows where you can catch well-known performers from the ‘80s, ‘90s and even one from the ‘60s. And who knows? You may just spot them out and about before and after the performance.
Jimmie “JJ” Walker
“Dyn-o-mite!” Walker’s catchphrase was all the rage during his time on the 1970s TV show “Good Times.” The comedian went on to star in such movies as “Airplane!” and other TV programs like “Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island.”
He will perform live at the Comedy Cabana, 9588 N. Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach, on March 1.
Chubby Checker
It’s hard to believe that this 1960s singer and dancer is still twisting after all these years, but he is, and you can catch his show at The Carolina Opry, 8901 N. Kings Highway, on March 2.
Checker became famous with his song, “The Twist,” ultimately creating a new dance when he took the stage on American Bandstand to sing it.
Air Supply
It’s safe to say that many Generation Xers’ romantic life involved one or maybe even two ballads from this Australian duo.
Known for such hits as “All Out of Love” and “Lost in Love,” they were among the top hit makers for love songs in the 1980s. They will perform March 7 at The Carolina Opry, 8901 N. Kings Highway, on March 7.
Rick Springfield
Speaking of the 1980s, this rock heartthrob got his start on TV’s “General Hospital” before hitting the charts with such classics as “Jessie’s Girl” and “You Better Love Somebody.”
He’ll perform March 20 at The Carolina Opry, 8901 N. Kings Highway, on March 20.
Darius Rucker
The lead singer of the well-known and chart-topping band Hootie & the Blowfish and solo country singer makes a trip to the Myrtle Beach area each year for the band’s Monday After the Masters golf tournament.
The Celebrity Pro-Am brings in different celebrities to raise money for children’s educational programs. The event begins April 12 and spectators can watch the tournament. On April 14, the band, formed in Columbia, South Carolina, will perform a concert at the House of Blues.
Other celebrities you can see there are:
- Jay Demarcus of the band Rascall Flatts
- Michael Waltrip, two-time Daytona 500 winner and NASCAR broadcaster
- Larry Fleet, country singer and songwriter
Vanna White
North Myrtle Beach’s darling is often making trips to the city to visit family and friends. Last year, the longtime “Wheel of Fortune” host and letter turner came to the Myrtle Beach area last year with co-host Ryan Seacrest, visiting several of Vanna’s favorite spots.
White, an avid golfer, has announced that she will once again participate in the ONEFlight Myrtle Beach Classic PGA Tour, which happens from May 8 through 11 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach. It’s a good chance she will take the opportunity to once again visit her North Myrtle Beach haunts.
Spectators are also welcome to watch the tournament.
38 Special
Popular in the 1980s, this band is remembered for such hits as “Hold on Loosely” and “Caught Up in You.”
No doubt many members of Generation X danced to the rock band’s tunes and attended their concerts. You can see them again on May 9 at the House of Blues, 4640 Highway 17 in Myrtle Beach.
