A woman took to social media this week claiming she was denied an abortion for an ectopic pregnancy by an Horry County medical center.
The TikTok video, which went viral, was titled with “I need an abortion for an ectopic pregnancy and I’m being refused” and included the woman tearfully explaining that the pregnancy was on her ovary and she was being denied care. The video has since been taken down.
An ectopic pregnancy is when an egg is implanted outside the uterus, which cannot result in a baby.
It’s unknown if the incident actually occurred as privacy laws prevent medical centers from releasing patient information. However, her claims resulted in Conway Medical Center issuing a statement. The medical center has received negative comments since the video was first posted Wednesday.
“Conway Medical Center and our clinical providers understand their legal and ethical obligations to provide appropriate medical care to all patients,” according to the statement. “...All patients have the right to be informed about their care, participate in decision making, and refuse treatment. This is a policy we abide by and we are confident we are not only following our policy but that we are also in compliance with all state and federal laws.”
The statement also said because of social media posts “spreading inaccurate information about the care” at the center and numerous threats, they have had to increase security measures.
