With developers starting construction in North Myrtle Beach, a new business will open instead of a closed restaurant in the area.

Construction crews have worked on the property at 210 Highway 17 North, near Lowe’s in the Surfwood Shopping Center. However, with only the roof and a few beams installed over the site work, the structure indicates little of its future purpose.

Public records paint a picture of the plans for the plot of land. The City of North Myrtle Beach’s public records database shows that a permit was issued for the property Sept. 24, 2024, approving a 3,388-square-foot commercial building for a Wells Fargo bank.

A spokesperson for Wells Fargo’s South Carolina branch did not return a request for comment before publication.

The permit shows that the Oakland, Ga.-based firm Dooley & Mack Constructors of GA Inc. is the contractor for the project. The new bank will occupy land that a restaurant once called home. After 21 years in operation, North Myrtle Beach’s Friendly’s location closed in March 2022.

The Sun News reported then that an increase in lease payments played a role in the Friendly’s closing.
