Myrtle Beach has a $20 million plan to keep the Pelicans Baseball. Here’s what’s included
Will the Pelicans stay the Myrtle Beach Pelicans?
Myrtle Beach’s city council is trying to make that happen at Tuesday’s morning meeting.
The city’s meeting agenda says renovations to Pelicans Ballpark in downtown Myrtle Beach will cost approximately $20 million.
That’s almost $40 million off what meeting docs from Horry County last fall showed.
They said Pelicans Ballpark renovation costs would be approximately $58.7 million through the fiscal year 2028.
These renovations are required by the Minor League Baseball Association for improved player development and conditions. They’ve been implemented all over the U.S. over the past couple of years.
Under the new 20 year lease, the resolution said the annual lease payment will be $750,000.
This winter time vote for Myrtle Beach’s city council comes after a contentious fall filled with meetings, personal testimonials and money questions.
“We are enthused by City Council’s proposed resolution and grateful for the community’s support for keeping the team in Myrtle Beach. We appreciate our partnership with the City and Horry County as we take this important step toward securing a long-term commitment to ensure the Pelicans remain a beloved part of the community for generations to come,” the baseball team’s president, Ryan Moore, said in an emailed statement to The Sun News.
In the fall, city council members unanimously voted to extend the city’s current contract with the minor league baseball team through the end of this summer’s season.
Records show that 70% of the stadium is owned by the city and 30% is owned by Horry County.
To watch the meeting, city residents can live stream it on the City of Myrtle Beach’s YouTube page. It’s scheduled to start Tuesday at 10 a.m. Here’s the link.
