Barefoot Landing is one of the most popular destinations in the Myrtle Beach area, but that doesn’t mean every storefront on the waterfront property is open for business.

Burroughs & Chapin owns the 250,000-square-foot site and claims six million visits annually. A spokesperson for Barefoot Landing did not respond to a request for comment.

With so many visitors, one way to gauge the property’s performance is to look at the number of occupied buildings at Barefoot Landing. Burroughs & Chapin’s website features a lease plan for the location that maps out which buildings are occupied or empty.

According to the lease plan, Barefoot Landing has 11 units available or with a pending lease. The 11 storefronts represent more than 19,000 square feet, less than 10 percent of Barefoot Landing’s retail space.

The number of vacant units at Barefoot Landing is comparable to that of another popular retail destination in the Myrtle Beach area. With about 140 restaurants, shops, and attractions encompassing 700,000 square feet, Broadway at the Beach receives double the visitors to Barefoot Landing.

Burroughs & Chapin owns Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing, two of the Grand Strand’s most visited attractions.

Despite being nearly half a million square feet bigger, a lease plan for Broadway at the Beach on Burroughs & Chapin’s website shows that eight units, comprising 43,000 square feet, are unoccupied now.

The level of vacancies probably isn’t a concern for Broadway at the Beach or Barefoot Landing, as the small number of open units gives retail sites flexibility in selecting tenants. Both locations have also recently added new attractions or announced expansion plans.

In 2024, Barefoot Landing opened the Big Chill Island House restaurant, which attracted attention when it started serving during the springtime. Broadway at the Beach will open a new surf park on the property with a restaurant, a beach club, a surf academy and other amenities. Broadway at the Beach demolished two closed restaurants on the property at the end of 2024, but it is unknown what will replace them.
