During winter in the Myrtle Beach area, the beach loses tourists — but gains horses.
Horseback riding is allowed on certain beaches across the Grand Strand, often only being allowed in the winter months. Here’s what the laws says about horses on the beach.
Where are horses permitted?
People can bring horses on to the beach on the southern end of the Myrtle Beach area. The Myrtle Beach State Park and Georgetown County allow horses.
At the Myrtle Beach State Park, each horse needs a permit to be on the beach and it cannot stay overnight or travel on campgrounds. Within Georgetown, horse owners must collect any waste the animal creates.
People can also go on horse tours on Waties Island near North Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Horry County and Surfside Beach all prohibit horses on the beach year round, according to local ordinances.
When can horses go on the beach?
Georgetown County and the Myrtle Beach State Park admit horses on the beach from Nov. 1 to the last day of February.
Are horseback riding tours available?
Fortunately for tourists and people who don’t own horses, there are a couple beach tours available across the Grand Strand.
Horseback Riding of Myrtle Beach offers tours at the Myrtle Beach State Park three times a day Monday through Saturday during the off-season. Rides last 90 minutes and cost $95.
Inlet Point Plantation offers ocean-front rides on Waties Island year-round. Hour-long rides range in price from $150 to $250 depending on time of day and time of year.
