SC man buys plane and then the day after purchase crashes it in Conway. What we know
Federal investigators were on the scene of a plane crash that happened Tuesday morning.
A small aircraft crashed into a shed on West Brownway Circle in Conway at 6:54 a.m., according to an Horry County Fire Rescue Facebook post.
The small two-person plane took off from Greenwood, South Carolina, and was headed to the Conway Airport, an Horry County Police report said. During the flight, the plane began sputtering and slowing down so the pilot attempted to land it in one of the nearby fields.
While trying to land, the plane crashed into the top of the shed and then slid onto the “lean to.”
“(They) tried to land in (the) grass field and they didn’t quite get there,” said Charles Brown, who owns the property where the shed sits. “(I’m) thankful they’re alive. Shed can be fixed, repaired. Could have been a lot worse.”
The pilots recently bought the planes, the reports said, with Brown saying the pilots just bought the plane Monday.
Two people in the aircraft were not injured, the report said. The shed received minor damage.
The pilots declined to comment on the crash. It is unclear who the plane is registered to.
Lanes of traffic were blocked as rescue crews work to clear the crash.
The Federal Aviation Administration was on the scene Tuesday morning investigating the crash. The plane was taken apart and was being hauled away about 10 a.m.
Horry County Police are investigating.
