Update: Person killed in hit-and-run crash in Myrtle Beach area named. Man is arrested
A person died after being struck by a car early Saturday morning in the Myrtle Beach area, but highway patrol and rescue crews have provided conflicting information of whether the person was on foot or riding a moped.
A man was arrested later that afternoon in the fatal crash.
Charlton Horne Carnucci, 30, was charged Dec. 21 with hit and run, duties of a driver involved in an accident with death and driving on a suspended license from DUI, Cpl. Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Sunday by email.
Cynthia Hernandez, 40, of Myrtle Beach, died from her injuries sustained in the crash, according to an email from Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.
South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a pedestrian was in the roadway on Claypond Road in the Forestbrook community about 3:45 a.m. Dec. 21 when they were struck by a vehicle, according to an email from Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. The vehicle then left the scene, he said.
Ridgeway said that Hernandez died on the scene.
However, Horry County Fire Rescue reported in a Facebook post that the crash involved a moped. It is unclear if the victim was walking or riding.
Carnucci was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
McSpadden said the coroner’s office is attempting to locate the family of Hernandez. It is believed she is originally from Miami and may still have there, she said.
If anyone knows how to contact Hernandez’s family, they are asked to call the Horry County Coroner’s Office at 843-915-5110 during business hours or Horry County Communications/Dispatch at 843-248-1520 after hours and on weekends.
