Drivers used to going 55 mph on a section of U.S. 501 will have to slow down in the new year.

The speed limit on the busy highway will be reduced to 45 mph from Gardner Lacy Road to the S.C. 544 and U.S. 501 interchange beginning Jan. 2, 2025, according to a release from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The speed reduction will be for both the southbound and northbound sides of U.S. 501.

The temporary speed change is part of the U.S. 501 widening project.

The release did not say how long the speed reduction will last. However, signs will be placed along the highway and drivers should be prepared to slow down for the work, the release said.
