Many people made a South Carolina beach city their new home this year, making it one of the top moved-to cities in the country.

Myrtle Beach had the second highest ratio of people moving to the city compared to those moving away in 2024, according to moveBuddha, a company providing resources for people who are moving. Overall, South Carolina was the most popular “move to” state in the country.

For every 100 people who left Myrtle Beach, 256 moved in, according to moveBuddha’s 2024 report.

Being a popular retirement spot helped put Myrtle Beach at the top of the list, as the top five cities are all locations sought by retirees

“Retirement destinations have an edge on the competition: their residents are more likely to have moved from out-of-state and are less likely to move away again,” moveBuddha’s report said.

Myrtle Beach’s lower cost of living, proximity to nature and high quality of life has drawn in many people in recent years, The Sun News previously reported. Of the nearly 40,000 people who live in the coastal city, around 25% of the population is over the age of 65.

The other top cities were The Villages, Florida; Ocala, Florida; Greenville, South Carolina; and Franklin, Tennessee.

Overall, the Carolinas continue to be top states for people to move to. Wilmington, Cary and Asheville in North Carolina, as well as Charleston, are within the top 20 most moved-to cities, according to moveBuddha.

“It makes sense why so many people are moving to Myrtle Beach. Our great weather, low cost of living and wide selection of fantastic restaurants and attractions make Myrtle Beach a very desirable place to live,” said Patrick Lloyd, the Myrtle Beach Creative Services manager. “We are happy to welcome new residents and look forward to continuing to serve our growing population.”
