Homeowner Associations, or HOAs, have become commonplace among new developments in the Myrtle Beach region.

According to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs, in 2023 Horry County had the most HOA complaints in the state, accounting for nearly a quarter of all complaints registered in South Carolina.

Previous reporting shows that local legislators have gone as far as to try and pass laws that would limit the control HOAs have on new developments in 2015.

The bill was last recommended to the South Carolina Senate’s Judiciary Committee in May 2016, according to the history of legislative actions.

While some HOAs in Horry County might be disliked, a few have managed to celebrate the spirit of Christmas this holiday season.

One common way that HOAs have been able to spread some holiday cheer is by friendly neighborhood decorating competitions.

That includes an HOA in the Grand Strand near Coventry Boulevard, which has no issues with holiday decorating, according to resident Don Boucher.

He said that some residents have engaged in friendly competitions with neighbors over who has the best holiday light display.

Another HOA in the Myrtle Beach area, Highland Ridge, also has a Christmas light contest each year during the holiday season, resident and real estate agent Bennett Turner said via email.

This year, Turner said his HOA is giving out prizes for the best Griswald lights, the best traditional holiday light display and best overall.

For the Property Owner’s Association, or POA, near the Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach, they go as far as to encourage residents to decorate for the holidays, their POA President Drew Kreiling said to The Sun News.

“We encourage our residents to decorate their house,” Kreiling said via email. “We have a committee that rides around to look at all of our decorated house. This committee will also selected the best decorated house.”

He said the POA then acknowledges the resident or residents of the winning home in their committee newsletter.
